Whales or Gas?

Claudia Campero is part of Conexiones Climáticas team, based in Mexico City she is working on the Whales or Gas campaign to defend the Gulf of California from the attempt of the US gas industry to use Mexico as an exit route to Asia.

Hola, I am Claudia Campero. I come from Mexico where we are asking an important question:

Whales or gas?

US fossil fuel companies have been dumping gas to Mexico for years, but now they want to take it to another level:

They want to turn Mexico into the route for fossil gas to Asian markets.

The US has many export terminals but not on the West Coast. Since the movements have blocked LNG infrastructure for their pollution and impacts, the industry wants to bring their dirty business to Mexico’s Gulf of California, a place also known as The Aquarium of the World. With this, they would avoid the Panama Canal while wrecking a beautiful place filled with whales, and all forms of life and biodiversity.

But we won’t allow the LNG industry to destroy it.

The Saguaro LNG plant and its pipeline, promoted by a US company called Mexico Pacific, is massive. Its emissions would be equivalent to those of Sweden and Portugal combined, two entire Global North countries of pollution for one single fossil gas project. It’s pure climate madness! The pipeline intends to cross deserts and mountains with pumas, bears, and jaguars. If allowed, the fishing town of Puerto Libertad would change drastically and the huge LNG tankers would deeply affect whale breeding grounds of whales through noise and collisions, but we are in time to stop it.

Today, the Gulf of California has no heavy traffic, it is a privileged area where 39% of all marine mammals of the world are present, more than 900 islands, and 900 fish species - 90% of these areendemic. It is a World Natural Heritage Site. A growing coalition of 30 organizations and thousands of supporters are saying NO to sacrificing the whales and the beauty of the Aquarium of the World for the gas companies ́ profit.
